U13 v Heathfield 22nd March 2015

DSC_0228Heathfield 14 Shoreham 28

With the League season now completed, Shoreham U13’s, who finished a very credible 5th in the League, played another fixture against Heathfield, who finished 3rd in the League with the game between the 2 sides in the League finishing in a draw.

Shoreham started very strongly with some typical desiDSC_0338re and intent. 2 tries were scored with some powerful running, breaking the fragile Heathfield defence followed by 2 successful conversions.

Heathfield repeatedly came up against a stubborn determined Shoreham defence but finally broke through to score a try. Shoreham responded with some delightful passing rugby mixed up with their traditional power through the middle and scored a couple more tries to open up the gap in score with another couple of successful conversions. Heathfield scored a consolation try towards the end but Shoreham walked away with a very impressive performance and memorable scalp.

U11 v Bognor / Chobham 22nd March 2015

Shoreham U11 Bognor 1 Shoreham U11 took a large squad to Bognor and played three matches.

First up were Bognor who were outplayed by Shoreham for the vast majority of the match.  On a hard surface Shoreham moved the ball wide and found space in which to attack.

A much stronger performance in the rucks secured Shoreham more ball and this enabled the team to run with pace.  A 3-1 win was just reward for an excellent performance.

Next up were Chobham and Shoreham again played some excellent rugby.  Against a physical team we more than matched Shoreham U11 Bognor 3up in the ruck and maul but just failed at times in open play.  A 3-0 loss didn’t really reflect the closeness of the game.

Shoreham U11 Bognor 2

The final match was against another touring Chobham side and Shoreham played excellent rugby putting their opponents under concerted pressure.  In a match they dominated it was just the final execution which fell short and the match finished 1-1. Shoreham U11 Bognor

U11 Sussex Festival 15th March 2015

IMG_2835Shoreham U11s had a frustrating, tough morning at Haywards Heath, struggling to play their best at times, and at others playing some sparkling rugby.

Haywards Heath were always going to be tough first up and the eventual winners tore into Shoreham and ran into a clear lead.  The boys eventually got going but a competitive second half was too late and it ended 5-0.

Horsham were next and a much better and competitive performance made this a close game.  Excellent tackling and defence wasn’t matched by attacking opportunities and despite the performance it ended in a 2-0 loss.

Shoreham finally strung together some attacking play against Guernsey, managing to pass the ball to create space and stretch the opposition. This gave the boys belief and they ran out 4-1 winners.

Hoping to carry this good work into the next match Shoreham started playing after gifting Hove a 4-0 lead.  This sloppiness was to cost them as Shoreham slowly took the game to Hove and were eventually on top.  The 6-2 loss could so easily have been a win without the poor start.

Lookjing to end the day on a high Shoreham played old adversaries Crawley and a feisty match saw excellent tackling and strong running from the Green and Golds.  The 6-1 win was well deserved.

Shoreham finished fourth in the group, but with a more consistent performance been higher.

U9 Sussex Festival 15th March 2015

Shorehma U9Shoreham’s under 9’s put in their best performance of the year at the West Sussex festival.

They we’re run away winners of their pool group beating Horsham 4 – 2, Haywards Heath 8 – 3,

Guernsey 6 – 2 and local rivals Hove 5 – 2.

This meant a wait in the cold wind for all the other teams to play their runners up games before

they could contest the final against a second Horsham side.

Saving their best rugby of the day till this last game they started strongly against one of the strongest sides in Sussex.

With the score 2 – 2 at half time Shoreham’s vocal travelling support could scent a fifth victory.

The second half was a war of attrition with territory not readily conceded. Players from both sides suffered knocks as last ditched tackles flew in. It was with a mighty effort and some neat handling that Horsham scored a breakaway try and ,as Shoreham pressed ever harder in the last minute, a fourth try. Horsham the eventual winners by 4 – 2.

Shoreham’ s tournament was a whole team performance with every player contributing handsomely in attack and defence. A special mention, though, must be made of Thomas Molee and Reuban Edmundson who between them scored an impressive 19 try’s.

U7 Sussex Festival 15th March 2015

It was a cold overcast morning for the Sussex Mini’s Under 7’s tournament at Haywards Heath RFC but still Shoreham had a exceptional turnout of players. Even with cold fingers and toes fun was had by all in a very well run festival.

Players:  Aaron, Alfie, Harry, Jack, Lexus, Noah, Ralph, Richard & William.

Haywards Heath (1)  10. v Shoreham 4.

Shoreham got off to a flying start however Haywards Heath hit back hard and fast to overpower them with impressive interceptions and turnovers. Try’s from Harry, Richard & Ralph (2).

Hove (1) 9. v Shoreham 6.

The second match started with fast movement and passing setting up Jack for many a dash for the try line, the score stayed level toing & froing until a few cold fingers could not get a tight grasp on Hove’s tags, a closely fought match. Try’s from Jack (6)

Horsham (1) 9. v Shoreham 8.

Great passing and catching, the hands now warm, hardly a ball was dropped but alas Horsham just pipped the win with the final play in the game. Try’s from Richard, William, Noah, Alfie & Jack (4)

Crawley (1) 5. v Shoreham 6

A match that was all about defence for both teams, neither wanted to give anything away, however Shoreham threw in some magnificent tags and passing to edge their first win of the day. Try’s from Richard, Jack, Harry & William (3)

Crawley (1) 8 v Shoreham 12

Through to the playoff for 5th spot Shoreham faced Crawley (1) for a rematch of the hard fought win. Shoreham stepped to the field and switched the previous defensive tactic to attack. They ducked and dodged around the pitch dancing down the touch line for a convincing victory. Try’s from Aaron, William, Alfie, Lexus (2), Jack (3) & Ralph (4)

U11 v Crawley & Burgess Hill 1st March 2015

DSC_0451On a good day for muddy rugby, Shoreham U11s played 3 matches against 2 visiting sides from Crawley and one from Burgess Hill.DSC_0483
Crawley were first up and a committed game in heavy conditions set the tone for the day. It was Shoreham, who after their traditional slow start dominated this game but were unable to turn possession into points. Despite various opportunities where an extra pass or running left rather than right would have resulted in a score Shoreham eventually ended up behind. Crawley’s score was an excellent move and finally prompted Shoreham into life. Daring to pass the ball on a day unsuited to fast expansive rugby the green and gold’s got Will Willis over in the corner. The match ended one all but with a little more composure would DSC_0171have surely been a win.

The larger Crawley side were next and Shoreham built on their first performance. The off-loading and passing was taken to another level as the team tried, on a bog of a pitch, to play passing rugby. Despite a couple of poor phases of tackling which gave away tries, Shoreham dominated this match and regularly put their opponents under concerted pressure at the ruck before finding space by moving the ball wide. The best of Shoreham’s three tries was a fast flowing move which saw the ball through two or three dominant rucks before at least five players worked the ball quickly wide and into the corner for Toby Gale to touch down. It was an excellent try. Final score 3-2.DSC_0660

By now tired and caked in mud, the last match was against Burgess Hill. The physically strong opponents were always going to be direct and a lapse in tackling, probably due to tiredness let them in. Shoreham weren’t to end the day on a loss and determined play kept the game tight, ending 3 all.

U13 v Crowborough 22nd Feb 2015

DSC_0114Shoreham 81 Crowborough 5

Shoreham U13’s took the opportunity in this friendly against Crowborough to practice a few game play scenario’s they hope to use in their final League game of the season against Haywards Heath in a couple of weeks’ time.

Some superb team play opened up the opposition time and time again and most pleasing was the variable play that Shoreham demonstrated.DSC_0052

Precision kicking across the pitch to wingers running on, powerful forward play breaking the opponents line and some superb passing across the back line with speed and pace meant Crowborough were pleased to hear the final whistle.DSC_0017
