Heathfield 14 Shoreham 28
With the League season now completed, Shoreham U13’s, who finished a very credible 5th in the League, played another fixture against Heathfield, who finished 3rd in the League with the game between the 2 sides in the League finishing in a draw.
Shoreham started very strongly with some typical desire and intent. 2 tries were scored with some powerful running, breaking the fragile Heathfield defence followed by 2 successful conversions.
Heathfield repeatedly came up against a stubborn determined Shoreham defence but finally broke through to score a try. Shoreham responded with some delightful passing rugby mixed up with their traditional power through the middle and scored a couple more tries to open up the gap in score with another couple of successful conversions. Heathfield scored a consolation try towards the end but Shoreham walked away with a very impressive performance and memorable scalp.
East Grinstead 15 Shoreham 34
After a disappointing result against Eastbourne the week before Shoreham wanted to erase the memory of that with a strong performance against East Grinstead.
EG started strongly running in a well worked passing try.
This spurred Shoreham to react with the familiar passion and power which then saw them generate an immediate response and steamroller EG and run in 4 tries before half time with 2 conversions in difficult windy conditions.
EG ensured there was still a game on, pulling a try back, just before half time.
Shoreham started the second half determined to retain their dominance and scored 2 more tries with EG only able to score 1
Tremendous spirit and character from the whole Shoreham squad resulted in one of the best rugby performances they have given so far.
Eastbourne 21 Shoreham 19
A most thrilling game was played by Shoreham U13’s against Eastbourne on a wet large and heavy pitch.
Shoreham playing uphill in the first half were the strongest team but failing to score any points whilst camped within the Eastbourne 22m was to pay heavily as Eastbourne pounced and scored 2 converted breakaway tries taking them into half time 14 points ahead.
Shoreham came out fighting again in the second half and scored an early try in the corner but failed to convert. 2 further Shoreham tries both converted took Shoreham in front in the game and but for some strong defending again from Eastbourne stopped them scoring a 4th try.
In the dying seconds of the game Eastbourne found a final breakaway run under the posts to score and win the game for the hosts.
Shoreham 12 Heathfield 12
Shoreham U13’s earned themselves their first League 1 points of the season in their first home game against Heathfield.
The home side started like lions and took an early lead with some superb pressure deep in the opposition half which eventually led to a strong charging run and placing the ball behind the line.
Heathfield then established a strong control of the game with some disciplined forward pressure, winning scrum and line out ball too regularly and ended the half with 2 tries and a conversion to take a 12 – 5 lead into half time.
Another strong start to the second half from the opposition had Shoreham defending their line early on and that they did with typical commitment and character strength. Shoreham’s kicking game was a key defensive tactic throughout the game and eventually this turned to attack. A long kick into the opposition half was chased down by the Shoreham boys and after a couple of phases of play, the ball heroically won at the breakdown, was worked cleverly to allow the ball to be run in over for a try under the posts and a conversion to level the game.
Hove 17 Shoreham 36
Shoreham continued their unbeaten start to the season with their final friendly against Hove before they commence the League 1 games.
Hove started the game on the front foot with some serious pressure on the Shoreham try line which initially was defended only for the ball to be fired out wide for Hove to run in the first try of the game.
Shoreham were jolted into a response and quickly established their control of the game with 3 powerful attacks resulting in tries and went in at half time 3 tries to 1 up.
In the second half Shoreham were determined not to be caught out at the start and with the wind behind them stormed forward and struck with 3 quick well worked tries. Shoreham’s concentration left them for a short period and Hove capitalised with 2 late tries.

This season the team are competing in Sussex League 1 and have a few friendlies lined up before the league games start in November. This week, Bognor travelled to Shoreham to play the first friendly of the season on the full size senior pitch at Buckingham Park.
The Shoreham team, although rusty in certain aspects of play, started this season the same way they finished last season with a ruthless powerful performance that blew away the opposition.
11 tries and 7 Conversions to nil was an illustration of the difference between the two sides but enables Shoreham to play the entire squad and experiment with options of players in different positions.
Great start to the season and hopefully the team will continue to step up as each game arrives.
